Kansas City Streetcar
Next stop, shelters at the crossroad
of function and community-first design.
Running from the River Market on the north end to Union Station and Crown Center on the south, the Kansas City Streetcar, which opened to the public in May 2016, connects all the downtown neighborhoods with 16 platform stops and 2 miles of track. Streetcars arrive approximately every 10-minutes during peak hours and since they are fare-free, visitors and residents alike can easily explore Kansas City on their schedule. In fact, during the first two months of operation, the streetcars carried nearly 400,000 passengers.
Dimensional Innovations partnered with HDR Design, KC Streetcar Authority, KC Public Works, Streetcar Constructors, and local business owners to value engineer and fabricate 13 streetcar shelters and 16 marker signs. The steel and aluminum shelters feature edge-lit glass panels, a tough acrylic roof, and a custom ipe wood seat. The streetcar markers proved more difficult to engineer and fabricate than the shelters with their routed letters inlaid between two pieces of highly polished five-inch-thick acrylic.
