Healing Moments in Motion: Nemours Wings of Legacy
Challenge: Nemours Children’s Health not only delivers world-class care, but they’re also deeply committed to caring for the whole child. A generous donor wanted to give back to Nemours in a way that would make a lasting impact on patients and families. They envisioned a gift that would provide comfort and distraction during what is often a stressful and emotional time for young patients. The hospital had the space—a bright, high-traffic atrium—but the existing video display was outdated and limited in scope. Working within tight architectural and technical constraints, DI brought a bold vision to life, ensuring the donor’s contribution would be maximized to its fullest potential.

Wilmington, DelawareSolution: DI designed and engineered a rich multi-layered content experience that uses both physical movement and mobile devices to create moments of creativity and exploration. The outdated video display hardware was removed and replaced with a state-of-the-art, 50-foot-long, high-resolution LED screen. By blending storytelling, personalization and technology, this experience creates uplifting moments of creativity to kids who need it the most.
“As soon as a family walks through our doors, Wings of Legacy tells them, ‘This is a space for you.’ The DI team made it possible for us to even consider taking on a project of this size and significance.”
-- Jennifer Sciolla, AVP, Child & Family Services
Layer One: Gentle Motion, Joyful Reaction
The screen itself becomes a window into a peaceful world. Using full-body tracking, visitors and patients can interact with the environment using simple gestures like waving or reaching. With each movement, grass ripples, butterflies flutter and rocks gently flip over through the scene.
Even in stillness, the screen offers a sense of calm with flowers swaying in the breeze and insects resting on sun-warmed rocks. The scene moves with the quiet serenity of nature. It’s a comforting way to offer a positive distraction, especially for patients who need a moment to stretch and move around.
Layer Two: Wings of Legacy – A Personal Journey
Through mobile devices, patients and visitors can fully customize their own bird avatar by choosing patterns, colors, wing styles and emotion-based prompts to match how they’re feeling. The experience is intentionally responsive and designed to gently uplift and balance how a child may be feeling in that moment.
As their bird takes flight, it explores a digital world inspired by real landmarks on the Nemours Estate, unlocking a wide variety of accessible mini-games along the way. From puzzle challenges and memory games to light-chasing adventures and collective quests, the experience is built to grow with the patient. Visual rewards like sparkling trails and firework celebrations provide joyful feedback, inviting everyone nearby to join in a shared moment.
Frequent visitors can track their progress, revisit achievements and discover new layers each time—ensuring the experience stays gently supportive through every visit.
Layer Three: Messages of Hope
Sometimes, the smallest gestures carry the most meaning. In the final layer, visitors can choose from a selection of pre-approved uplifting messages and send them into the digital sky—where their bird writes the words across the clouds for all to see. These messages create an ever-changing atmosphere of encouragement, with hospital staff able to update and customize the message library at any time to reflect the changing spirit and needs of the community.
Technology in Action
DI didn’t just create content; we engineered the entire experience from the ground up. The curved LED screen spans 50 feet across the atrium wall and uses over 17 million pixels to deliver sharp, vibrant visuals, even at close range. The system includes multiple high-resolution motion-tracking sensors that interpret body movement. Our in-house AV experts integrated the hardware with custom-built software, ensuring a seamless experience for real-time interaction. The backend system also includes an intuitive content management system (CMS) that allows Nemours staff to easily update messaging and puzzle images.
