An S&T Welcome Worth Exploring
Challenge: Missouri S&T is known for science and engineering, but that’s only part of the story. The school wanted a welcome experience that showed visitors the bigger picture: a place where academics live alongside the arts, campus traditions, student life and a future full of possibility. The university’s master plan calls for a vibrant destination that helps prospective students imagine both their academic and social lives on campus while celebrating the diversity of Missouri S&T’s programs, including hands-on disciplines and the arts. There was also an experience challenge: Missouri S&T didn’t want a visit that felt pieced together or tailored to one type of guest. Perspective students, families, alumni and visitors all needed to feel like they were part of one continuous journey that feels personal from the start.

Solution: It starts with a personalized welcome. A large LED screen greets scheduled visitors by name. The standout feature comes from three vertical columns that anchor the entire experience. From there, the journey unfolds as one path, designed to work for everyone walking through the door, whether they’re exploring Missouri S&T for the first time or reconnecting with it.
At the heart of the space, those three vertical, custom columns guide visitors through the story of Missouri S&T. More than eye-catching structures, they create a narrative arc: first, what Missouri S&T is all about, what life here feels like and where a Missouri S&T education can lead. The story-driven flow fits the university’s vision to celebrate its past, present and future.
"Dimensional Innovations gave us a vision for how to visually display all of the things we're not able to show students while they're touring campus. The very first draft hit spot on. They took it and made it amazing."
-- Casey Bouse, Assistant Director of Admissions for Campus Experience
Student Life and Campus Experience
The first column is student life and campus experience. Instead of presenting Missouri S&T as all academics, the experience helps visitors picture the human side of campus — the energy, the traditions, the community and the everyday moments that make a university feel like home. Missouri S&T specifically wanted prospective students to better imagine their academic and social lives on campus and see themselves as part of the community.
Academic Journey
The second column is the academic journey, including liberal arts. This was a key part of the story. The design doesn’t lean into a narrow, tech-only identity. Instead, physical artifacts and interactive content show a fuller academic ecosystem, with science and engineering represented alongside music, theater, culture and other liberal arts. In other words, the space reflects the university Missouri S&T says it is: one that celebrates both hands-on programs and the arts.
Looking Ahead to Alumni Success
The third column looks ahead to alumni success and future potential. Interactive storytelling helps visitors connect what starts here with where graduates go next. Alumni profiles and a digital globe showing where graduates live and work, shifting the conversation from “What can I study here?” to “What kind of life can I have from here?” That forward-looking message is central to the university’s stated vision for the Welcome Center.
What makes the whole experience work is the balance. It feels high-tech, but not cold. It feels polished, but not intimidating. It is immersive without losing the human touch. The custom-fabricated columns give the space its strongest visual identity, while the hanging artifacts and glowing acrylic panels create a strong visual identity, while the touchscreens, student stories and editable CMS keep this experience fresh over time. Accessibility was also built in from the start, with ADA-compliant spacing, wheelchair-friendly clearances and closed captioning on video content.
The end result is a welcome center that broadens the story of Missouri S&T in all the right ways. It shows visitors that this is not just a place for future engineers. It is a place for creators, performers, problem-solvers, explorers and alumni in the making. Most of all, it gives people a chance to see themselves in that story from the moment they walk in.
