Renewing the Heart of the Kansas Union
Challenge: The University of Kansas Memorial Union has served as a gathering place for nearly a century. Created as a memorial to KU students and alumni who died during World War I, the building remains both a meaningful campus landmark and an active space for student life. After decades of daily use, however, many areas were ready for a refresh, including the fourth-floor main lobby, where finishes had remained largely unchanged since the early 1990s.
Rather than approach the project as a single renovation, KU Memorial Union wanted to establish a broader vision for improving spaces throughout the building over time. The goals were to create a brighter, more welcoming experience, respect the Union’s history, prioritize improvements within available funding and keep the busy facility open throughout construction. As with any renovation of a historic building, the team also had to plan for unknown conditions, from uneven flooring to existing materials that could only be fully understood once demolition began.

Solution: Dimensional Innovations began with strategic master planning for the Union, helping KU establish a cohesive design direction, identify priorities and determine how improvements could be phased over time. The fourth floor became the first step in that multiphase vision, giving the team an opportunity to introduce a fresh look and functionality that could help inform future renovations throughout the building.
Throughout design development, DI worked closely with KU Memorial Union to align the scope with available funding, evaluating design priorities, materials and construction requirements together rather than treating them as separate decisions. This collaborative approach helped the team focus investment where it would make the greatest impact while developing a realistic path from design through construction.
Serving as the prime experiential contractor for the first phase, DI coordinated selective demolition, construction, architectural finishes, building systems and accessibility requirements across the lobby, lounge, corridor, vestibule and Jayhawk Walk areas.
Flooring became one of the project’s largest scopes—and one of its most technically challenging. Once the existing finishes were removed, the team uncovered uneven travertine and sections of an old brick sidewalk, revealing that portions of the current interior had once been outside.
Both surfaces required extensive preparation and leveling before the new flooring could be installed. DI turned those difficult existing conditions into a bright, modern foundation that visually connects the lobby and supports the rest of the renovated environment.
A previously blank wall was transformed into an inviting lounge feature anchored by an LED fireplace and large custom mantel. Architectural woodwork, including floating shelves, walnut seating surfaces, slat walls and coordinating ceiling details, brings warmth and texture throughout the space.
Ceiling
When the original custom tile Jayhawks were removed from the floor, the familiar detail was displayed overhead through bright, dimensional Jayhawk ceiling elements. Visible from across the lobby, the new feature preserves the spirit of the former design.
Technology
Large digital displays were integrated into the architectural slat wall to support directories, maps, calendars, event information and other campus communications. Smaller graphic updates were also incorporated near Jayhawk Ink on the second floor.
The work was completed within a fast construction window while the Union remained active. The team coordinated around students, elevators and daily building traffic, adapting barricades and construction zones as needed to keep people safely moving through the facility. The completed renovation gives the Kansas Union a more welcoming and useful fourth-floor arrival experience—one that respects the building’s memorial legacy while better supporting the students, visitors and campus activities that continue to bring it to life.
