Naval Academy Athletic Association

Built to Inspire: The Story Behind the Terwilliger Center

Challenge: The Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) wanted more than a visitor center—they needed a place that elevated recruitment. The goal was to tell Navy Athletics’ story in a way that feels authentic to the physical mission and service culture, while showing the scope of achievement. In short, turn the Ron Terwilliger Center for Student-Athletes into an immersive, can’t-miss first impression that connects history, academics and life as a midshipman.

Solution: DI teamed up with NAAA to shape a journey that talks with visitors, not at them. The experience spans across 25,000 square feet, mixing big “wow” moments with intimate, personal stories.

“The team at DI was sincerely invested in the spirit of what his facility needed to be and perfectly conveyed that through experience and messaging.”

– Chet Gladchuk, Director of Athletics, United States Naval Academy

Visitors step in beneath a suspended Blue Angel F/A-18E Super Hornet, the same plane flown by the Blue Angels, hanging from a single anchor point in the stairwell. From there, visitors head to the Akerson Theater, where a 180° film shows midshipman life. From there, Tosé Exploration Hall invites hands-on discovery: interactive touchscreens spotlight Navy legends and Heisman winners, while a “Who Will You Become?” AR moment lets visitors picture themselves in Navy roles.

Throughout, materials and details nod to the Yard—clean lines, purposeful finishes and tech that disappears until it’s needed. Content is easy to update, so the space stays fresh season after season. The result is a conversation starter for recruits and families: real stories, real stakes and a clear sense of what it means to wear Navy across your chest.
