For most collegiate athletic programs, long-term success and a competitive recruiting advantage are intertwined with how effectively a university’s story is told. So when the University of Pittsburgh underwent a massive rebrand with Nike that resulted in a dynamic new look for their athletics department, Dimensional Innovations was signed for a multi-year, master brand planning partnership to breathe new life and energy into their sports facilities.

 

Working alongside the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics, MSA Architects, DLA Architecture and Carpenter Connection, we’ve helped bring an invigorated, rejuvenated experience to Pitt Athletics. Featuring the updated team logo created by Nike, the newly-renovated and reimagined branding brings a deeper feeling of cohesion and storytelling to the Duratz Athletic Complex, Petersen Sports Complex and Petersen Events Center.

 

The Duratz Athletic Complex serves as a recruiting gateway for the Panthers and highlighting the rich history of Pitt Athletics was of the utmost importance. Adorned in Pitt Royal and Pitt Gold, our team worked to redesign the entire building, integrating new and visually-immersive graphics that relay the ferocity of the program. We also exemplified the rich history of past collegiate standouts through displays showcasing All-Americans, Collegiate Hall of Fame inductees, NFL stars and academic excellence.

Additionally, every detail within the Petersen Sports Complex epitomizes the spirit of what it means to be a Pitt athlete. By supporting multiple teams within the athletics department, signage, wayfinding and locker room updates proved to be an important component of the redesign for men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams.

 

For both gameday excitement and recruiting experience, we implemented high-energy elements within the Petersen Events Center. Pitt athletes, coaching staff and die-hard fans are immersed by massive branded elements, customized lighting and displays, and cutting-edge technology throughout the facility. Breaking down opponent film and building up team camaraderie occurs in the team’s state-of-the-art meeting and video room, while donors get to leave their mark on “The Blueprint” — a dedicated display to pay homage to all who’ve helped support the program.

Through cohesive storytelling elements, brand design, custom video content and large-scale graphics, the Pitt Panthers are positioned for recruiting excellence and tenacious athletic performance. More than that, it lays the foundation for student-athletes to excel, both on and off the field. To which we say, “Hail to Pitt!”

Drew Berst is an Executive Director and oversees the Collegiate Sports and Higher Education practices at Dimensional Innovations.

Berst lives and breathes college sports and is the single point of accountability for all collegiate clients. Professionally, Berst has been working in the sports facility industry for over twelve years and has been involved in over $2 billion worth of athletic facility projects. Leading the team to over 400% revenue growth and tripling the company’s market share since 2015, he’s attributes DI’s unique, design-build approach to project delivery, master brand planning partnerships, facility graphics, branding and interactive technology experiences to his success.

Born and raised in Kansas City and earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, as well as an MBA from the University of North Carolina – Wilmington, Berst is steadfast in his belief that there is no such thing as a family vacation, unless a sporting event is involved.

Most importantly, Drew is a husband to Betsy and a parent to three girls – Edie, Nora and Margot.
