Many high school students today are exploring non-traditional paths to higher education, considering options such as trade schools or entering the workforce directly after graduation. As these prospective students and their families embark on campus visits, creating a memorable and engaging experience is vital. To achieve this goal, numerous institutions have established dedicated welcome or visitor centers, designed to serve as the initial point of contact upon arrival.

These visitor centers play a crucial role in introducing guests to the campus's rich history, events, educational offerings, and student life experiences. While some universities boast elaborate standalone visitor centers equipped with interactive displays and knowledgeable staff, others leverage existing campus facilities such as student unions, alumni associations, stadium/area spaces, or specific academic department buildings

These spaces serve not only to greet visitors warmly but also to immerse them in the unique atmosphere of the institution. Whether housed in a state-of-the-art facility or within the heart of a department building, each space aims to showcase the university's strengths and opportunities. From highlighting cutting-edge research in engineering or the vibrant arts scene, to emphasizing community engagement initiatives or career development programs, these centers provide invaluable insights into what makes your campus distinctive.

Ultimately, by investing in these welcoming environments, universities can leave a lasting impression on prospective students and their families, helping them envision themselves as part of the campus community and fostering a sense of belonging from the very first visit. These spaces are an investment into the future of your institution.

You Asked, We Answered

How are these projects funded?

Depending on the institution's status, state funding may be considered if enrollment is declining, and boosting enrollment could benefit the local economy and the state. Alternatively, projects may rely on donors for support, often resulting in multiple donor recognition areas within the space.

Have you seen a return on investment in these buildings/spaces?

The Jayhawk Welcome Center is a great example of return on investment, check out this prospective student testimony: Months earlier, Fadelli applied to KU as one of eight colleges, "almost as a joke.” After the tour, she knew KU was the right choice. “It was the only school where I felt truly welcomed,” Fadelli says (University of Kansas Alumni Association Magazine). Since opening the experience, the University of Kansas announced that the 2023 fall freshman class is the largest in university history.

Explore the power of creating engaging visitor centers to welcome prospective students and offer a memorable introduction to campus life.
