A Civic Landmark Built from
Kansas City’s Love of Literature
The Kansas City Public Library set out to transform a simple parking structure into a civic landmark that celebrates the city’s cultural identity and love of literature. Partnering closely with architects, contractors, and community leaders, Dimensional Innovations helped bring the Community Bookshelf to life—a monumental façade of 26‑foot‑tall book spines selected by Kansas City residents. Through collaborative design‑assist, specialty fabrication, and large‑format environmental graphics, DI turned an everyday piece of infrastructure into an iconic placemaking experience that reflects the spirit, history, and creativity of Kansas City.
Challenge: The Library needed to transform a utilitarian parking garage into a meaningful civic symbol—one that felt authentic to Kansas City, was structurally feasible, and was visually compelling at an architectural scale. The solution had to balance community input, fabrication complexity, and long‑term durability.
Impact: The Community Bookshelf has become one of Kansas City’s most recognizable landmarks—earning national design awards and transforming a parking garage into a beloved piece of civic art. It anchors the Library District, strengthens community pride, and demonstrates the power of Placemaking and Environmental Design to elevate public infrastructure.
Solution: Dimensional Innovations collaborated with JE Dunn, CDFM2, Jonathan Kemper, and MC Lioness to design and fabricate the Community Bookshelf—22 oversized book spines standing 26 feet tall. Rare books were professionally photographed, digitally modified, and printed on translucent materials, then mounted on an aluminum substructure with plexiglass windows. The titles were selected through a public voting process, ensuring the installation reflected Kansas City’s literary heritage and community identity.
