Museums + Zoos + Art

Zoo Knoxville

The thing for me is watching how long people engage with the displays. There's just something kid-sized and

friendly about the scale of these experiences. It's been incredibly well received.

Lisa New, President & CEO, Zoo Knoxville

Dimensional Innovations was selected by Zoo Knoxville to design and fabricate their Amphibian and Reptile Center (ARC), which opened to the public to critical acclaim in April of 2021 and has since won Top Honors for Exhibit from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The Zoo leadership wanted to create a truly interactive and immersive visitor environment, utilizing both hands-on and digital interaction to entice visitors to engage with these amazing creatures that are often the least understood and most avoided exhibits in the zoo. With the themes of Conservation, Beauty, Stewardship, and Discovery as the leading ideals, the ARC features an all-custom interactive exhibit that brings out the personality, fun, and mystery of the animals, while educating on their function in, and importance to, our world.

Interactive experiences include: 1) the “Croakers” frog lifecycle game, in which visitors start as a tadpole and try to make it to frog-hood before they croak; 2) the hands-on Snake Table that allows them to see with infrared snake vision, handle oversized snake jaws to see how they hinge, and animate the ways different snakes move; and 3) the Create-a-Herp immersive theater, a curved, 270-degree immersive space where visitors can create their own “herp” creature and set it free in one of three different environments: forest, river, or desert, to see how it fares in the wild.

DI also created a comprehensive suite of custom donor signage and displays throughout the ARC campus, which blend in seamlessly with the exhibits and environments, while calling out and honoring the generous donors who helped make the ARC a reality.
