Minnesota Twins Celebration Signs
Traditions take new shape at the
intersection of nostalgia and innovation
The Minnesota Twins are elevating traditions old and new with two tech-focused "WOW" moments inside Target Field. Channeling the organization's vision of elevated nostalgia, DI stepped up to the plate to reimagine the iconic Minnie & Paul Celebration Sign and create a complementary Baseball Medallion atop the right-field digital tower.
Working alongside partners Mortenson Construction, Dynapac and Topline, DI aimed to modernize the beloved Minnie & Paul sign with updated technology and new Twins’ branding. The sign still features the hallmarked handshake, now brought to life by real-time mechanical movement rather than a plexiglass-protected shifting light display.
“Win! Twins!” accompanies the celebratory handshake and can also be illuminated independently for additional functionality and fan engagement. 1,203 feet of customizable RGBW LEDs line the sign’s exterior with a total of 155 LEDs scattered throughout the structure’s design for a bright and eye-catching addition to centerfield.
Mounted atop the ballpark’s right-field tower is a luminous Baseball Medallion that shines and spins in natural synergy with the celebration sign.
Inspired by the city’s sky bridges, the steel sphere measures roughly 12 feet in diameter and rotates around the 9-foot-tall “TC” Minnesota Twins' logo enclosed inside. Sixty programmable RGBW LED nodes shimmer around the medallion along with 70 pairs of animated illuminated stitching visible beyond the Twins stadium and into the Minneapolis skyline.
Technically speaking, the baseball is a 3-frequency geodesic sphere made up of icosahedron triangles – higher frequency equals more triangles. And with more triangles, the more spherical it becomes. (We can thank our engineering team for that one.)
With flexibility and versatility in mind, the LEDs on the celebration sign and baseball medallion are customizable, allowing stadium staff to change effects and colors in real time based on designated presets. For example, lights can flash in synchronicity to highlight big plays and even dazzle to complement the game-end fireworks show.
Bringing these unique additions to life required close collaboration with Twins stakeholders and DI’s interdisciplinary teams. From design to engineering, tech development to fabrication, maintaining open internal communication throughout all stages of the project was paramount. The ability to quickly create, pivot and problem-solve all under one roof empowered us to finish the job on a competitive timeline.
As the first recognizable updates to the stadium since its opening, the Minnie & Paul Celebration Sign and shining Baseball Medallion evoke a sense of sentimental innovation and work in tandem to create an exciting fan experience unique to Target Field.
