Elevating Fan Energy at the Knapp Center Atrium
The Challenge: For more than two decades, the Knapp Center has been the front porch of Drake Athletics—an entry point for the fans and the community. As Drake basketball surged in national momentum, the university recognized the need to re-energize its arena’s entrance experience. The challenge? Deliver an upgrade—enhancing branding, showcasing standout athletes, celebrating donors and improving the overall fan journey—without the scope or budget of a traditional architectural overhaul.

Crafting the Solution: With a design-to-build approach that prioritized creativity and cost-efficiency, Dimensional Innovations led the complete transformation of the Knapp Center's fan-facing atrium—delivering high impact without the need for an architectural partner. At the heart of the space, a sculptural ceiling element inspired by the bridges of Des Moines introduces the atrium with a bold, architectural gesture.
Down a short flight of stairs, below the atrium, the newly established Paul F. Morrison Hall of Honor creates a dual tribute to Drake’s athletics legacy. One area highlights women’s athletics and the university’s deep Title IX history, while the other celebrates men’s programs and other long-standing athletic achievements. For those not venturing into the Hall of Honor, DI also introduced info panels in the lobby, making Drake’s history and achievements more accessible to every visitor.
With bold, horizontal display cases and brushed aluminum finishes, the design unites past and present in a visual narrative. Featuring panels and interchangeable graphics, the lenticular wall allows fans to celebrate standout teams—including Drake’s nationally recognized basketball programs—through a vivid, motion-driven showcase.
To celebrate donors to the Knapp Center campaign, DI designed a new atrium donor wall featuring layered blue acrylic panels and a charging Bulldog graphic that draws the eye and energizes the space. Just steps away, a larger-than-life mural declares Drake as “Des Moines’ Hometown Team,” with each oversized letter filled with campus and city imagery—a high-impact photo opportunity that deepens the community connection.
By managing every detail—from early concepting to fabrication and installation—DI helped Drake turn their fan-facing entry into an experience that honors history and proves that powerful storytelling doesn't always require a massive overhaul. It just needs a partner who knows how to make every square foot count.
