Trailheads & Tech: Creating Big Impact in Smaller Spaces for Cabela’s

The Challenge: Cabela’s was opening two new stores—in Albuquerque, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas—with significantly smaller footprints than their typical retail locations. But a smaller space didn’t mean smaller expectations. They needed a high-impact, immersive in-store experience that wouldn’t eat up valuable floor space. The solution had to be engaging, educational and give both customers and associates the confidence to explore Cabela’s vast range of outdoor gear without relying on traditional displays or one-on-one walkthroughs.

Crafting the Solution: DI partnered with Cabela’s to design a digital-forward retail experience that delivered maximum engagement with minimal square footage.

  • Trailhead Kiosks: DI installed three interactive kiosks—one each for camping, hunting, and fishing—plus VR headsets to create immersive product education zones that turned store associates into instant experts.
  • Camping Trailhead: Customers could browse tents, view interior 360° shots and click on hotspots to learn more about specific gear. DI staged and shot more than 30 tents to create this virtual catalog experience.
  • Hunting Trailhead: Guests explored different hunting blinds via 360° views, interacted with staged weapons and played a hunting game—developed by DI—that let them virtually “hunt” deer or turkey, complete with a final score.
  • Fishing Trailhead: Shoppers joined 2017 Angler of the Year Brandon Palaniuk on a virtual fishing trip. DI captured every moment—from catching a 10+ lb. bass to exploring his boat via 360° footage—enhanced with real-time stats, pro tips and gear callouts.

By blending immersive content with interactive tech, DI helped Cabela’s bring the outdoors inside—creating a customer experience that fit perfectly in their new, smaller-format stores.

He is an active member and regular attendee of various conferences, including the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), Entertainment Experience Evolution (EEE), and CinemaCon.
