Putting a Ring on Innovation: AR Experience Transforms Jewelry Shopping

The Challenge: Helzberg Diamonds—a national retail jewelry brand known for its quality and service—recognized a need to modernize its in-store experience to better connect with a new generation of shoppers. Younger consumers expect more than traditional sales counters; they want engaging, tech-forward interactions that blend convenience with personalization. Helzberg’s challenge was twofold: integrate new technology in a way that felt natural within the retail environment, and reimagine the engagement process for customers searching for that once-in-a-lifetime ring—without losing the human touch.

Crafting the Solution: DI led the one-of-a-kind in-store technology moment: The Helzberg Virtual Ring Experience. By leveraging augmented reality (AR), DI developed a solution that lets guests virtually “try on” more than 100 ring styles in real time—offering multiple angles and smooth transitions as users move their hands. At the heart of the experience is a custom-designed palm rest embedded with motion-tracking sensors, carefully engineered to guide hand placement and capture accurate data for ring sizing and fit. 

The team faced and overcame a unique challenge: traditional AR technology wasn’t built for something as precise as wrapping a digital ring around a real finger. DI’s solution involved extensive rapid prototyping to perfect the ergonomics and ensure the experience was as effortless as it was magical. The result is a retail innovation that not only redefines how customers shop for rings but repositions Helzberg as a leader in modern, personalized shopping experiences.

He is an active member and regular attendee of various conferences, including the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), Entertainment Experience Evolution (EEE), and CinemaCon.
