Banff Gondola Scout Panels: Bringing the View Back to Life
The Challenge: At more than 8,000 feet above sea level, Banff Gondola Summit Experience, owned and operated by Pursuit Collection, offers some of the most breathtaking views in the Canadian Rockies. But for some visitors, the payoff wasn’t guaranteed. Dense cloud cover often blocked the mountain views, leaving guests disappointed after making the climb to the top. The ask: create a solution that gives visitors a clear, immersive look at Banff’s natural wonders, even when nature doesn’t cooperate.

ElectrosonicCrafting the Solution: DI designed and installed large-format Scout Panels powered by DI’s first-of-its-kind custom Cloud Vision software technology. The technology was built for Banff and the unique visibility challenges at altitude. Each Scout panel centers on a 105-inch interactive touchscreen housed in an engineered framework with etched topographic panels, creating a durable, high-visibility interface for visitors. The panels are positioned to frame different vantage points (North and West), giving guests two complementary perspectives of the surrounding valleys and terrain.
"The team at DI really took time to understand Banff, who we are and where we fit into our visitor experience, rather than just here at the Gondola."
-- Mirit Poznansky, Director of Inititiatives and Experience Development, Pursuit Banff Jasper Collection
On screen, Cloud Vision lets visitors swipe through epic environmental states from sunshine and snow to alpenglow and the northern lights. It layers in interpretive content about peaks, waterways and landmarks. Guests can scrub timelapses, move the sun across the sky to see the light change over the range and explore context cards via intuitive UI elements designed for fast wayfinding on a public touchscreen. Interfaces are available in English, French and Stoney Nakoda to welcome international audiences and honor local languages.
The Scout Panels redefined the summit experience, ensuring that every guest leaves the Banff Gondola with a breathtaking story to share, no matter the weather conditions. Visitor satisfaction has grown as people now spend more time on the observation deck, exploring the digital layers of Banff’s landscapes and natural beauty. The investment by Pursuit has elevated the Gondola’s reputation as a must-see attraction and positioned Banff as a leader in innovative, guest-centered interpretation.
The Scout Panels are Phase 1 of a broader interpretive masterplan. Future phases under consideration expand the experience with elements like an interactive topographic map, dimensional wildlife encounters, “one with nature” photo-ops and immersive theatres alongside updated wayfinding.
